Water Use Prohibitions

On June 1, 2006, the North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD), which serves more than 1.5 million people in 60 cities in the North Texas area, will initiate Stage 3 of their Water Conservation and Drought Contingency Plan. The NTMWD is requesting a five percent (5%) reduction of water use by its Member Cities.

In January 2006 the NTMWD initiated Stage 2 drought conditions, calling for voluntary conservation measures for consumers and businesses. This was echoed by the City of Princeton, with prohibitions on hosing of concrete surfaces and excessive water run-off

To achieve the five percent (5%) conservation goal requested by the NTMWD, the following mandatory restrictions will apply for Princeton, with enforcement, effective June 5, 2006.

Mandatory compliance is requested immediately:

  • Washing or hosing down of buildings, sidewalks and driveways is prohibited.
  • Excessive water run-off from any landscaped area onto streets, alleys, parking lots or other paved surfaces is prohibited. Water run-off is excessive when it extends for a distance greater than ten (10) feet past the targeted irrigation area for commercial sites.
  • Outdoor irrigation, including hand watering, is prohibited between the hours of 9:00 A.M. and 7:00 P.M.
  • Landscape watering is limited to one day per week, the correct method for watering is as follows: even number addresses can water on Tuesdays. Odd number addresses can water on Wednesdays.
  • Landscape beds may be watered on any day by using a hand-operated hose equipped with a positive shut off nozzle.
  • Soaker hoses for foundation maintenance are authorized as necessary.
  • Filling up of new pools is prohibited.  Pools may be filled to maintain operational levels. No draining then refilling is allowed for maintenance.
  • The use of potable water to refill ponds or lakes is prohibited.

Princeton’s Public Works Department will be carefully monitoring adherence to these restrictions. The City of Princeton’s new Drought Contingency Plan, and additional drought information, can be found at Princeton City Hall. Other information may be obtained by calling (972-736-2711).
