If you see a Police Department employee perform outstanding work, tell the employee – or tell us – about it. Following are suggestions for commending an employee:
All commendations are logged and placed in the employee’s permanent personnel file.
If you are unsure of the employee’s name, describe the employee and list the specific actions or demeanor that impressed you. Including the date, time and location the incident occurred will be very helpful in forwarding the commendation to the right employee(s).
The Princeton Police Department is vitally interested in taking action when its employees are derelict in their duties or are guilty or wrongdoing. Your complaint will be given a fair and thorough investigation.
Who Can Make a Complaint?
The person who believes that an employee has wronged them, and persons who observe an employee guilty of wrongdoing may file a complaint. Other persons may give statements as witnesses in support of another person’s complaint.
How to Make a Complaint?
Complaint Against Officer Form
When a citizen has a complaint against a Police Department employee, they may contact any Police Department supervisor, who will forward the complaint to the appropriate person. Complaints that are relatively minor in nature will be directed to the employee’s immediate supervisor. Allegations of serious misconduct will be forwarded to the Police Chief. A citizen may contact the Police Chief directly regarding any complaint.
The Texas Government Code requires that all complaints against police officers that may result in disciplinary action be in writing and signed by the person making the complaint. Complaints of misconduct that are less serious in nature need not be in writing. Complaints must be made within 30 days of the incident unless special circumstances exist. The Princeton Police Department takes all complaints seriously and will investigate each complaint received.
Making a false complaint against a police employee is a violation of the Texas Penal Code. If a person knowingly or intentionally makes a false statement against an employee, criminal charges against that person can be presented to a criminal prosecutor under the appropriate statute.
What Happens When a Complaint is Upheld?
When an investigation finds that the charges against a police employee are true, the Police Chief notifies the employee and may take one of the following actions:
Employees can appeal the Department’s decision to uphold a complaint and the decision to discipline an employee.
What Happens When a Complaint is Not Upheld?
Complaints must be supported by sufficient evidence. When the investigation cannot find the degree of evidence necessary to prove the employee acted improperly, the employee and the citizen will both be notified in writing.

Senate Bill 1074, successfully passed during the 77th Texas Legislative Session, became effective on September 1, 2001. The bill was designed to address a major issue facing law enforcement in America – racial profiling. The bill mandates that law enforcement agencies in the State of Texas comply with the provisions as set forth in Articles 2.132, 2.133 and 2.134 of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure, by, first and foremost, adopting a written policy on racial profiling.
Two fundamental rights guaranteed by both the United States and Texas Constitution is equal protection under the law and freedom from unreasonable searches and seizures by government agents. The right of all persons to be treated equally and be free from unreasonable searches and seizures must be respected. Racial profiling is an unacceptable tactic and will not be condoned.
The Princeton Police Department’s policy on racial profiling clearly defines acts that constitute racial profiling, strictly prohibits officers from engaging in such acts and provides a process by which individuals may file complaints if they believe that they have been stopped or searched by a peace officer based solely on their race, ethnicity or national origin.
The Police Department’s mission is to provide a safe and secure environment throughout the entire community. Members of the department strive to serve and protect the community in a courteous, conscientious and professional manner.
The Police Department will accept complaints from any person who believes he or she has been stopped or searched based on racial, ethnic or national origin profiling. No person shall be discouraged, intimidated or coerced from filing a complaint, nor discriminated against because he or she filed a complaint. A Racial Profiling Complaint Form may be picked up at the Police Department. Complaints should be directed to the Police Chief.
Under Article 62.08 of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure, information contained in either an adult or juvenile’s Sex Offender Registration Form subsequently entered into the Texas Department of Public Safety database is public information. However, certain restrictions apply.
